Five Exterior Design Principles That Work in Chennai's Climate
Façades in Chennai take a battering — monsoon, sun, salt air. These are the principles we apply to make exteriors age well.
Chennai's climate is not kind to exteriors. Eight months of punishing sun, a concentrated monsoon that dumps 150cm of rain in weeks, and proximity to the sea that carries salt into every surface. An exterior that looks good on render day can look neglected within three years if the material and detailing choices were made for appearance alone.
Principle One: Overhang Before Paint
The single most effective exterior maintenance strategy is a generous overhang. A 900mm projected roof edge keeps rain off the wall surface and reduces the number of wet-dry cycles a painted wall goes through by half. Paint fails at joints and cycles — reduce cycles, extend life.
Principle Two: Material Joints Are the Enemy
Water finds every joint. Where two different materials meet on an exterior — stone cladding meets plaster, window frame meets wall, parapet meets roof slab — is where failure begins. We design these transitions with drainage profiles, backer rods, and sealants specified for the UV load at that elevation.
